Onomichi city has thrived as a port since the middle ages thanks to the bounty of the Onomichi Waterway that connects the Sea of Japan with the Pacific Ocean, much like a river. Many temples, shrines, gardens, and homes were built in the strip of land between the waterway and the three mountains of Onomichi, and the city today is like a miniature garden featuring everything from ancient to modern tastes in its winding streets.
